POLICE BRUTALITY IN KOMATIPOORT MUSJID —

STATEMENT BY DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE

The conduct of SAPS members during the raid of a Muslim prayer facility was unnecessary, unprofessional and completely unacceptable. While such gatherings are prohibited during the lockdown, to treat people participating in peaceful prayer in this manner can never be acceptable.

I have referred this incident to the Minister to request that his office investigate the matter and demand that these SAPS members to disciplinary action for their conduct. These were not hardened criminals but a group of peaceful Muslim faithful praying to their God during this holy time of Ramadan. To have their God insulted in this manner is painful and requires a response from the Minister. This situation, like so many others during this lockdown, could have been handled with more professionalism and compassion by our men and women in blue whom we are supposed to trust.

I fear that the heavy handedness of many SAPS members across the country has done irreparable damage to the trust relationship between them and the communities they are supposed to serve.

Andrew Whitfield, MP (DA Shadoww Minister of Police)

(End of the DA’s statement)

We thank the DA PARTY for its support and for calling for action against the criminal police responsible for the desecration and brutality.
