THE AUSPICIOUS OCCASION OF THE 15TH SHA'BAAN
Both the 15th Night and the 15th Day of the Month of Sha’baan are holy occasions. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) ordered that the 15th Night of Sha’baan be spent in Ibaadat as much as possible, and on the 15th Day of Sha’baan, we should fast.
The events for the coming year are decided and recorded on this Night. It is a Night of great and immense barakaat. The Night should be devoted to private ibaadat, not public displays in the Musjid. In the quietude of the night at home, remain awake as much as possible to engage in Ibaadat – Nafl Salaat, Tilaawat of the Qur’aan, Durood Shareef, Tasbeeh, Istighfaar and Dua. It is a Night of Acceptance. Do not waste this auspicious occasion in sin and futility.
It is also Sunnat to visit the Qbrustaan (Cemetery) on the 15th Night of Sha’baan. In the Qabrustaan, reflect on your own Maut that tomorrow your abode will be the Qabr (Grave). Remember that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that the Qabr calls you five times a day to remind you that one day soon you will be in its belly of darkness, worms and torment. So don’t be forgetful of your final abode on this earth. Engage in Dua of Maghfirat (Forgiveness) for the Amwaat (Deceased). However, congregational forms of dua and recitation are bid’ah. Recite of the Qur’aan whatever you have memorized and make Dua without raising the hands at the graveside. Do not indulge in bid’ah. Bid’ah is evil, especially the bid’ah which has been given the form of ‘worship’. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Verily, Allah deprives every person of bid’ah from making Taubah.”
Muster up a little concern and determination to fast on the 15th Day of Sha’baan. It is a Day of great significance. Wake up for Tahajjud Salaat. It is the time when the servant is closest to Allah Ta’ala. It is the best time for acceptance of Dua. Increase the recitation of Istighfaar and seek forgiveness for sins, and resolve to abstain from all sin. Maut comes at any moment. Istighfaar at the time of Maut will be too late – it will be too late for regret.
Engage much and constantly in the recitation of LA ILAHA IL LAL LAAH, FOR THESE ARE THE LAST WORDS of the Mu’min on his departure from this dunya. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Ensure that your tongue is ever fresh with the Thikr of Allah.” While walking, sitting, working and in all activities keep the tongue engaged with this Thikr so that at the time of Maut there will be no problem. The Kalimah will then readily come to the tongue and lips.
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:
“Verily these hearts corrode just as iron corrodes (becomes rusty) when moisture reaches it.” The Sahaabah asked: ‘O Rasulullah! What is its polish?’ Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Remembering much Maut, and Tilaawat of the Qur’aan.”
