“He who maintains silence about the haqq, is a dumb shaitaan”
(Rasulullah – Sallallahu alayhi wasallam)
The following is salubrious advice of Hadhrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Rahmatullah alayh) for the Ulama who dwell in a misconception regarding their obligation of Amr Bil ma’roof Nahy Anil Munkar:
“Some people apparently practise righteous deeds and abstain from sins, but they also associate in the ghair mashroo’ (un-Islamic) and sinful acts of those who are disobedient to Allah Ta’ala. They associate merely on the basis of the idea that ‘this is the dunya’. While living in the dunya, ‘how can we abandon the family and the tribe?
Some people again whilst not associating (in the evils), are present and despite observing (the commission of sins) have no aversion for the munkaraat (evil deeds) of the perpetrators. They mingle with them as sugar dissolved in syrup. In other words, they do not refrain from daily (mingling) and eating together with these people. In brief, they do not display their aversion practically to these people. For such people, associating (with the transgressors) and maintaining silence are acts of ma’siyat (sin).”
(End of Hadhrat Thanvi’s malfooth)
Nowadays, almost all the Ulama are suffering from the maladies of mingling with the flagrant sinners and maintaining silence in the face of flagrant Shar’i violations. Then they justify their haraam stances with hallucinatory ‘hikmat’ (wisdom). But, neither can they fool Allah Ta’ala not themselves, for deep down in their hearts they do understand the actual motivation for their haraam stances. About them, Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’aan Majeed:
“In fact, man has baseerat over his nafs even though he puts forth excuses.”
These silent Ulama who participate in the wedding receptions and perform the nikahs and generally act like bosom friends of the transgressors have worldly designs for their stance which is in flagrant violation of the Shariah and in total abandonment of their Waajib obligation of Amr Bil Ma’roof Nahy Anil Munkar.
Either they are in the employ of Musjid trustees who are slaves of the dunya, or they depend on and look askance at the wealthy who favour them with fat donations and ‘hadyas’ (gifts) for their unnecessary expenditure at their Darul Ulooms and other pet projects. For the sake of worldly designs they barter away their Aakhirah. They abstain from proclaiming the Haqq for fear of offending their donors who sponsor their Hajj and Umrah tickets, the unnecessary and wasteful expenditure for their plethora of bid’ah jalsahs, for their ijtimahs and the like.
These Ulama must reflect on the shortness of life. Maut is stalking us all. Suddenly Maut will snatch them away. They will have to suddenly leave their pet ‘empires’ for which they live, slog and trample on the Deen. They act as if they are not going to die. They make no real preparations for the sojourn in Barzakh. Their ‘deeni’ activities are contaminated with nafsaaniyat. It is precisely for this reason that they feel snug at home with the people of baatil and bid;ah. Good examples of such baatil association and mingling with the Ahl-e-Baatil are the NNB Jamiat, Jamiat KZN and Tabligh Jamaat. As long as their worldly agendas can be fulfilled, they will associate with the people of bid’ah and baatil. Their prime motivation is never the Deen.
Allah Ta’ala revealed to Nabi Yoosha’ (Alayhis salaam) that soon He would be destroying a certain city of 60,000 inhabitants. Of these, 40,000 were fussaaq and fujjaar, and 20,000 were such Aabideen (worshippers) whose A’maal (virtuous deeds) were like the A’maal of the Ambiya. The entire city along with the 60,000 would be destroyed.
Nabi Yoosha’ (Alayhis salaam) supplicated: “O Allah! Punishing the fussaaq is understandable. But why will You also punish the 20,000 Aabideen?” Allah Ta’ala sent Wahi (revelation) to His Nabi explaining that notwithstanding their piety, they were completely desensitized to the fisq and fujoor of the others. They freely mingled with them, answered their invitations, ate and made merry with them. Hence, all of them would be destroyed. They had abandoned Amr Bil Ma’roof Nahy Anil Munkar justifying it with the confounded stratagem of dubious ‘hikmat’ in the same way as today’s molvis and shaikhs are perpetrating. Let them heed the Qur’aanic warning:
“Beware of such a punishment which will overtake not only the sinners among you.”
“Therefore, O People of Intelligence! Take lesson.” (Qur’aan)
