The following is an account of the demise of Mufti Faruq Meerati, given by a brother who was with him at the time of the tragic stampede in Mina.

During Hajj 1436/2015’s tragic stampede at Mina, Mufti Farūq was being accompanied by Mufti Salmān Murādabādi and Mawlānā Muīzuddīn, amongst others. Mawlānā Muīzuddīn shared an account of what happened with him and Mufti Farūq during the stampede, after they were separated from Mufti Salmān amidst the chaos of the smothering crowd.

As the crowd in the area of the stampede grew and the throng became intensely packed and suffocating, they felt a strong push from behind. This resulted in Mufti Farūq falling to the ground. When Mawlānā Muīzuddīn tried helping Mufti Fārūq he himself fell upon Mufti Fārūq, lying upon him back to back. Thereafter, at least three more individuals fell on top of them. Mawlānā Muīzuddīn narrated that as he was yelling in panic, Mufti Fārūq was calmly reciting the kalimah and the talbiyah. He continued to calmly recite the kalimah and talbiyah till his voice faded away. رحمه الله تعالى.

Mufti Muhammad Farūq Meerati رحمه الله passed away in the state of ihrām, and was buried in Makkah Mukarramah on the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah 1436 AH. A scholar from the United States, who was at the Hajj, made Du’a for Mufti Farūq in Makkah Mukarramah after hearing of the stampede and him being unaccounted for. Shortly thereafter, he was blessed with a vivid dream which contained glad tidings in regards to Mufti Farūq رحمه الله.

May ALLAAH (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa) accept him into His infinite mercy as well as all of those who passed away in the tragic incidents of the crane accident and the stampede...aameen.

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه that a man was performing Hajj with the Messenger of ALLAAH صلى الله عليه وسلم  and his she-camel threw him and he died. The Messenger of ALLAAHصلى الله عليه وسلم, “Wash him and shroud him in two garments, and do not cover his head or his face, for he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection reciting Talbiyah.” (Sunan al-Nasā’ī 2857)

In Allah’s creation there are no accidents. The most infinitesimal particle / atom moves by the command and intervention of Allah Azza Wa Jal. Regardless of the entity to whom blame is attributed for the tragedy, in the final analysis it was a calamity commanded by Allah Azza Wa Jal. May Allah Ta’ala grant us all the taufeeq to repent, reform and turn unto Him for succour. Commanding us to turn to Him with repentance before His Athaab (Punishment) strikes, Allah Azza Wa Jal says in the Qur’aan Majeed:

“And turn in repentance to your Rabb and submit to Him in obedience before there comes to you the Athaab, then you will not be helped.” “And follow the most beautiful of (Laws) which have been revealed to you from your Rabb before the Athaab suddenly overtakes you whilst you do not understand (and expect it).”

All those who had died and who were injured in the calamities were ‘handpicked’ for their respective fates by Allah Azza Wa Jal. He knows and we know not. Our function and obligation are only to submit in obedience to Allah’s Shariah and to beware of His Wrath which our flagrant acts of fisq, fujoor, bid’ah and shirk invite. Bootlinking and bootlegging the Saudi regime by covering up its un-Islamic malpractices are not the response for these occurrences. The response should be Amr Bil Ma’roof Nahy Anil Munkar, and to proclaim the Haqq regardless of how bitter it may be to the villains and the culprits.
