“I have an issue concerning gheebah and fitnah. The people of PE are so sunken in lies and engrossed in deceit that they don't realise the dangers of committing these major sins. It is not only the ordinary people. Even ‘moulanas’, hafizes, ect., engage in this fitnah.

It’s becoming so bad that people have made it a hobby of theirs to entertain themselves and others by talking ill about others and ruining the lives of the innocent. The main place where this is taking place is in some Malabar shaytaani houses where there are gatherings for females. At these gatherings gheebah takes place. There is also a gathering for the men where the same happens, and it happens on a Friday after Jumuah – Astaghfirullah! May Allah Ta’ala protect us all from this terrible fitnah of the gheebat-mongers.

Please publish an article on this, because this is no small thing. It is one of the major sins and it should be stopped. May Allah Ta’ala guide us all, Ameen. Froma concerned sister, jazakallah.   (End of letter)

Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’aan Majeed:

“O People of Imaan! Abstain totally from suspicion, for verily, some suspicion is sin. And, do not pry (into the affairs of others) nor commit gheebat of one another. What! Do any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? (Most certainly) you will abhor it. Fear Allah! Verily, He accepts repentance, and is Most Forgiving.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:

“Gheebat is worse than zina (adultery).”

Gheebat is a true statement made behind someone’s back – a statement which will cause him/her hurt if he/she comes to know it. The Day of Jumuah is most auspicious. It is holier than the Day of Eid. Sins committed in holy places and in holy times are multiplied manifold. On the Day of Qiyaamah, those who indulge in gheebat will be forced to consume the flesh of corpses.

It is most lamentable that people would resort to such evil and fitnah, especially on Jumuah. The houses where these acts of Satanism are perpetrated are foul, mal-oon (accursed), and under the ghadb (Wrath) of Allah Ta’ala. Those who have made the Day of Jumuah a day of indulgence in gheebat and fitnah should reflect and understand that the Curse of Allah Azza Wa Jal settles on them when they gather and indulge in gheebat.

The good deeds of those who engage in gheebat are eliminated, and the sins of the victims are loaded on to them (i.e. on to those who indulge in gheebat.) These evil gatherings should stop. They should reflect and imagine themselves devouring the corpses of the Muslims about whom they are making gheebat.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:

“The worst of Allah’s servants are those who walk about with gossip. They cause separation between lovers (i.e. brother and brother, sister and sister, husband and wife, etc.), and they accuse innocent people with evil.”
