A SMALL MADRASAH WITH R30 MILLION CASH SEEKS DONATIONS
SHOULD WE DONATE?
Question
There is a Madrasah in Johannesburg called Madressa Zia-ul-Badr. It has about 75 students. It has a huge cash balance of R31 million, yet it is appealing for funds. Is it permissible to donate Zakaat and Lillah to this Madressa? The total expenses for the year as shown on its financial statement was R12 million.
Answer
It is not permissible for the Madrasah having such a huge sum of money to appeal for donations. If it is true that the Madrasah is sitting with R31 million, then to say the least, it is extremely lamentable.
With only 75 students, what is the Madressa doing with this huge amount of money, and why does it want more? It will be only years later that the Madrasah will require funds.
Muslims should exercise much care when contributing. They should not contribute to an organization which has R31 million, and an expenditure of R12 million.
There are other worthy causes to which contributions should be made.
